date palmsDate palms at Salton Sea, California

  1. My grandmother used to LOVE dates. And it used to be that wherever there’s date groves you’d see little roadside stands for date shakes & date cookies & every imaginable kind of date flavored thing. I don’t see those roadside stands anymore.

  2. I was going to ask if those sacks contained the dates (I rather suspected that they did), but then Eliza more or less spoke to that. Love the image of the date palms. You draw us right into that path.

    1. According to Wikipedia — the fruit doesn’t ripen at the same time so several harvests are required. In order to get fruit of marketable quality, the bunches of dates must be thinned and bagged or covered before ripening so that the remaining fruits grow larger and are protected from weather and pests such as birds.

In the place where I took this photo, the Salton Sea is a major bird migration stop over, and there are huge groves of date palms surrounding the sea.

    1. I was astonished when I looked up “dates” and saw all the photographs of bazaars all over the Mediterranean zone and date-dealers and all the kinds of dates. Riches in far away places we don’t know is there.
