June bug in a grapefruit tree. I remember these iridescent bugs from my Arizona childhood. Not surprising, since their habitat is the U.S. southwest. They’re really quite gorgeous. An example of a scarab, the official name of this particular specimen is Figeater beetle.

Excellent photos. For a vegetarian, I like the predator waiting to attack look in the first photo.

Thanks David! I think bugs close up are scarey, as opposed to bugs not close up, which are creepy.

Up close like that it looks pretty intimidating. Great shot though!

I agree! I wouldn’t want to be the same size, or smaller!!!
Thanks, Gunta.

My 8-yr-old is asking if they are aggressive. Beautiful capture. =)

From what I read on wikipedia, it doesn’t seem like they’re fighters. I guess those mandibles are for eating fruit.
Thanks for the visit, Diana.

Love how you got insect sex into this MK 😉
(Or am I the only one who noticed ….)

I actually have a shot that’s more graphic, but I would have had to use one of those black rectangles like in the naughty pictures! I decided on a more modest image.
Thanks Val.
