Today my partner and I visited a botanic garden just a few miles away from the new house. She took the “good glass” macro lens, while I took the zoom. These photos are hers, not mine. When we sorted through our prizes for the day, we were both stunned to see the hummingbird’s tongue. Here’s an extremely cool high speed video from Wired Magazine of a hummingbird tongue. Really? I carried the zoom lens? What was I thinking?

Two really fantastic photos. I love the color in the second.

Thanks David. I’ll pass along your appreciation to the photographer. And I agree, they’re beautiful & exciting (for me).

Yep, it’s a gorgeous shot of a male Anna’s. Your partner did really, really well with these. That tongue is simply amazing.

Wow, cool link, so fascinating to see how they drink. A. got a lucky shot as I can imagine that was a split second in real time. Well done! 🙂

Can you imagine the odds of being at the right place at the right time with the right camera, and then having the hummingbird choose to favor you with a sight rarely seen? All you have to do is click in that perfect millisecond. But I was there and I didn’t get that shot! She did good! Thanks Eliza, I’ll pass your kudos along.

Wow, I’ve never seen that before… totally cool, and with the macro! Crazy!! Tell me about a new botanic garden?!!! I haven’t been to one up that direction!

It’s the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont – right next to the School of Theology. It’s 86 acres, totally planted in California native plants. It’s wonderful! Walking under oak & sycamore, smelling the many varieties of sage, trying to get a good shot of the Monarch butterflies. You will love it Sue. The macro has very very good glass, and it shows in every photo. Fixed focal length at 85mm, Nikon calls it a “micro” lens. Unlike my 75mm-300mm zoom, which is more prone to camera shake. That’s my excuse & I’m sticking to it.

I know where the garden is, haven’t been by or thought of it since kids were college shopping. I lived clear out in Thousand Oaks during those years. I’ll need to go and explore again! Thanks so much!!

Thank you. I see myself more as a photo journalist, not at the quality level of art photos. But it’s sure fun!

So beautiful! I don’t know why you aren’t showing up on my Reader. I’m taking the dogs off my blog because you are absolutely right. We can’t help them if we can’t find them. Thank you for that.

Thanks Gigi. Sorry for the lonesome dog rant. Of course I could go to the local pound at any moment. I just was feeling helpless & angry at the humans.
