Today’s excursion was to Big Bear Lake, elevation 7,000 feet, about 85 miles east of Los Angeles. There was a bunch of these busy ants, and so large that I feared setting my camera bag on the ground! Am I seeing teeth here? My best guess is that this is a Mound Ant. Perhaps you can tell me?

Omg, that thing could star in one of those B horror movies from the 60s! Yeah, I’m seeing teeth as well. How was it up on the mountain? Gorgeous down here today.

It was a pretty day up there, and a bit nippy. There were actual patches of real snow in the shady spots!

Pretty scary face when it’s magnified.
I wouldn’t have put my camera bag down either.
Looks like it could give you a pretty good bite!

Even unmagnified these guys were formidable looking! Lots of them! Fast moving! Intimidating!

YIKES! Looks like an alien invasion. I’m not sure I would have stuck around to take the shot.

Excellent shot. Could not have been easy to get a portrait given the speed at which hats move.

Thanks Susan! It was quite obliging of him to turn his head just right, to show off his mandibles.
