It is a great quote! Newton was referring to Occam’s razor which, as you probably know, proposes that in explaining causes the natural world, the simplest explanation is preferred over a multiplication of causes. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam's_razor) I have seen a different manifestation of the beauty of simplicity in my software development days, where a simple solution to a program is often experienced as “elegant”. It’s a lovely thing.
And yes, I got way way down to get that shot. The hard part was getting back up!

I hurt my right knee years ago while I was pulling weeds. I didn’t do anything to deserve it – it just gave out. Then when that one healed, I hurt the left one. Grrrr. So I treated myself to two cortisone shots before I headed off for vacation this year. Age leads to wisdom, if not to good knees.

I hear ya. My right was operated on two years ago and I really have had to give up long hikes (sigh). I remember all that walking I did in Europe and S.America – glad I got to do it while I was young.
Luckily, yoga has helped me a lot, esp. gardening – really has made me stronger and improved my balance noticeably. I love it and will practice it forever!

It is so worth it! I like that it is an individual practice. I go at my own pace and if it doesn’t match the class, I hold off & rest or do something that feels better. I have a good teacher who encourages that. No comparisons, no competition…that is not what it is about! I love the mind/body connection – so good for me!

I have no excuse! I belong to a YMCA just 10 minutes away — pool, racquetball, jacuzzi, yoga, tai chi, zumba, weight room, cycling, even Bollywood classes. All for $25 monthly. It’s embarrassing to admit that I spent my day mowing the lawn, cleaning the deck, washing the floor – instead of treating myself like royalty! I suspect a retirement neurosis going on here. To your point Eliza, the mind/body awareness is the main thing.

That is a great deal – I spend twice that amount for only one yoga class a week!
I know the nagging push of ‘idle hands are the devil’s workshop’ mentality. Why is it so hard to just sit and relax guilt-free?

Yes, “dummy” is a bit of an anachronism, isn’t it? I think it is a paraphrase for modern ears. I like what I read elsewhere – “Nature is pleased with simplicity, and affects not the pomp of superfluous causes.” I think that’s much more poetic.
And the little fungus? Or mushroom? I have no clue what it is, just that I found it quite charming! It seemed to me the perfect place for a tiny earth spirit to sit beneath.

such a well taken shot… and a perfect quote. We see these ink caps usually in late September/October but our weather has been so mild and wet recently anything could happen. (even the californian poppies are back in bloom from seed dropped earlier this Summer)

Thanks for telling me what these little mushrooms(?) are. I’d never seen one before, near as I can recall. Such pretty little things. Mild and wet weather sounds like a dream! Not only is California in the midst of a severe drought, but it’s also been quite hot for weeks & weeks. The weather is anomalous all over, isn’t ti?

I’m pleased I could help on the ID of the mushrooms. these do look like common ink caps we find all over our woodland. They are edible but not to be consumed with Alcohol. Having said that I’m no expert and any mushroom should be regarded as poisonous if its not on the store shelf :-). We did have the wettest winter on record but still very mild. From then on Spring and Summer have just been perfect; and they don’t come like that often so.. yes would fit into your description of anomalous

I got up close and personal with a lovely toadstool a year or so ago and appreciate the difficulty in getting back up part. Had similar when I went kayaking recently and tried to get out along the dock. Oh dear.
